A buzz from doing laundry

My husband and I have both been hanging laundry outside to dry all our lives. Never had a problem except occasionally stiff clothes. Until last week, that is.

Saturday morning I started to put on a pair of jeans and something sharp was hitting me just above my right  knee. It felt like a crab or jelly fish had grabbed unto me. It was yellowjacketintensely painful so I immediately flung them off to discover a yellow jacket.   And we’re not talking bad fashion here. We’re talking a tiny, but immensely powerful stinging insect.

I was in so much pain I couldn’t decide what to do first, kill the insect or run for ice.

I killed it. I usually try to take insects outside but I wasn’t taking any chances.

Then I ran for ice.

Now yellow jackets are often grouped with bees but they are wasps. And they sure do sting.

Bet you didn’t know that unlike bees, they can sting as many times as they want. And this one did. And it didn’t take long at all. Im not stupid. I didn’t hesitate to throw off those pants.

When I looked at my leg, I had big welts and I counted at least five bites. The redness is just starting to subside six days later.

Some people are allergic to yellow jacket stings. I didn’t think I was, but it sure did swell.  That is a sign of an allergy. When I put ice on my leg, it relieved some of the pain and luckily it didn’t progress any further.

So will we let a little bug stop us from hanging laundry outside? Are you kidding? Of course not. We can save money and the environment.

But I sure will inspect the clothes before I bring them in the house. I prefer to keep my encounters with wildlife to the outside where I can run quickly.
