A new encounter with the weed monster

Three-day weekends are just made for gardening. Now, if you’ve kept up with gardening on a regular basis, you probably had a picnic this weekend.

I didn’t and therefore, the most I could hope for was a weed pulling party. Without the beer.

Isn’t it amazing how we had almost no rain this year, but yet the weeds just grew and grew? Hardy little creatures they are.

Crabgrass is the number one lawn weed in Pennsylvania and it has crept into my flower garden as wnew weedell. Of course I have dandelion and thistle. Lots of spiny, get stuck through your gloves thistle. But every year I seem to pick up a new variety. This year, the new one has long leaves that resemble parsley. I did a quick search and didn’t find anything so if anyone can ID it, that would be great. Of course it doesn’t really matter. It’s going to grow anyway.

Otherwise the garden is just fabulous. We had a slow start but the dahlias but we have cut almost 500 dahlias. Yes, we keep track of it just for kicks. And to see how we did compared to last year.

Soon it will be time to begin saving seeds from marigolds, zinnias and any other flowering plants.

Is it my imagination or are there truly more butterflies this year? Here’s how you can attract birds, bees and butterflies to your yard.

How is your garden growing? We’d love to hear from you.
