Thermostat battles: Up or down, broke or frigid

blog_thermostatYes, I knew that buying a house in the Poconos with electric heat was going to cost lots of money. I knew I’d have to work on supplemental heat.

I wasn’t prepared for that first winter of solitude when friends and family members refused to come to my house because it was just too darn cold. I asked, “Haven’t you ever heard of BYOB? Bring your own blanket?” One of my neighbors actually brought his own kerosene heater so the house would be warm by the time he came with his wife for dinner.

I used to huddle in the smallest room in the house just so I could close the door and turn up just that thermostat.

When Ronnie and I married, we immediately added propane heaters and life got a little more comfortable.

Now when I complain about it being chilly in my sewing room, Ronnie tells me, “What are you complaining about? I remember how cold it used to be here.”

We were not alone in our tundra. Homes all over the Poconos are cold, and entire families have been broken over thermostat battles. You know, the person who writes the checks sneaks in and turns down the thermostat and the teen who walks around in shorts goes over and turns it up. Then the person who pays the bills storms over and turns it down.

Then the spouse complains and turns it up. Then the bill payer says, “That’s why God made sweaters.”

 You get the idea.

One of our Pocono Record staffers moved a cabinet in front of the programmable thermostat. He told his family that if they wanted to turn up the heat, they have to move the cabinet.

Maybe you have done something this extreme. Maybe you bite the bullet and put on another layer. We’re  looking for people who’ve been through the battle and out the other side. Send me an email  about your situation, and solution if you found one.

And I’ll just keep my list of marriage counselors handy for the rest of us.
