Get your act together and enter the fair

Some of the entries from 2010

Hard to believe the summer is almost over. It must be, because it’s time to send in your registration if you want to submit your vegetables and flowers in the West End Fair. Friday is the deadline.

The county fair is open to all residents of Monroe County. New this year are an ethnic category in both the shelf and floor displays in the flower department.

This year the fair is also limiting the size of the exhibits. Turns out the fair is getting so many entries that officials are branching out to other buildings and even putting up a tent for some of the farm entries.

So shelf exhibits should fit an area 12 inches deep by 18 inches wide. Very important note: Floor exhibits should fit an area no larger than 30 x 36 inches.

The niche theme this year is Happy Anniversary, which coincides with the fair’s 90th anniversary but is not limited to that topic. Niche arrangements must fit a space 18 inches wide by 24 inches high and 12 inches deep. No more than two accessories are permitted.

So what can you enter? Fruits to flowers, crafts to carrots, photos to phlox, wine, beer and woven items, to name a few.

But it’s like the lottery. You can’t win if you don’t enter so get moving…
