Enough rain already?

Feel like you should be building an ark?

My lettuce was totally flooded in one of the many storms.

Forget container gardens. I lost my lettuce in August. Fact is, it was finished by that time, but other plants were not. My poor marigolds and petunias can’t grow in an inch of water.

It’s nice to have a shower or two, but an inch or two at a time is not garden friendly.

Surprisingly, we have dahlias growing like crazy. And they should keep going until frost. In September we picked almost 1,000 and made four trips to nursing homes.

Between the rain and the diminishing hours of daylight, it’s been tough to keep up with pinching buds. If you are growing dahlias, it is important to keep pinching the outer two buds so that the center bud grows into a bigger flower.

These Kelvin Floodlights are gorgeous but the stems are too short and they are crunched because I didn't pinch the buds.

Pinching the buds before they grow gives the other flowers room to grow without bring crowded by outer stems.

This is even more important at the end of the season as the growth rate slows.

If you have a lot of flowers like we do (probably about 80 crammed into our small spaces), it takes a long time.

But it’s really worth the effort.
