Appreciate life and other promises

It’s that time again. I’m going to make my New Year’s resolutions public so that I’m embarrassed when I don’t keep them. It won’t help me keep them, but maybe I’ll think twice because I bared my soul.

 10. Go through the mail each day. Take care of it immediately. Discard what I don’t need and pay the bills.  This will free up the dining room table for actual dining.

9. Put everything back where it belongs. Especially in my sewing room and pantry. Amy Leap provides ideas for organizing your pantry. I’m going to give it a shot.

8. Iron less. Just because. I do iron when I quilt but if you hang up your clothes right away you shouldn’t need to iron. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Ok I'm bragging that I sewed these on my day off. But it didn't take long. I just had to knuckle down and get focused.

7. Work on all my ufos. That’s unfinished sewing objects. I started the new year right by sewing flannel penguin pillow cases for myself. I bought the fabric three years ago with good intentions but I am always working on a present for someone. I made these in about two hours and I smile every time I look at them. Maybe this year I’ll make the flannel quilt that with the fabric that cost $XXX. Or the quilt for my son’s wedding present. They’ll be celebrating their 4th anniversary on June 14.

6.  Watch less TV. There are better things to do,. See No. 7.

5. Never throw away food. I know there are starving children around the world who could live a month on the leftovers in my fridge. Then there’s the fresh fruits and vegetables I buy that end up spoiling. I’m going to figure out how to get this right.

4. Eat more fresh fruit. See number 8. I took an orange to work three days in a row and didn’t eat it because I didn’t peel it. Enough. I’m thinking ahead and cutting it up in the morning. Especially, eat more fresh pineapple. My favorite part of going on a cruise (not that I’m a regular or anything) is that they always have fresh pineapple. Fresh pineapple is available in the store and it is so delicious. I bought myself a nice for Christmas and I am going to learn how to core it myself. Can’t be that hard.

3. Lose weight. Come on, you knew it would be in here somewhere. To do this, I refer to 4, 5, and 6. Actually 7 figures into this since I can’t sew and eat at the same time.

2. Be nicer to people. I just need to do this.

1. Spend time with friends. Life, and friendships, are too precious not to pay attention. Tuesday a woman who helped me to decorate for our wedding lost her battle with cancer. I hadn’t seen her in at least five years. She used to attend our church and we always talked about flowers and even went to the Philadelphia Flower Show together. She introduced me to scrapbooking. She had a chair with a flower pot sunken into it on her porch. She taught me to prune mums.

I knew she was sick. I could have gone to see her. But I didn’t.

I had planned to go after the holidays.

Life doesn’t take a break for the holidays. We need to appreciate it now.

Even I only keep one resolution,  I want it to be this one.
