Freakishly large oak leaf in Dingmans Ferry

Bigger than a foot

Thousands of brilliant leaves are now fluttering to the ground, but, Park Ranger Kathleen Sandt zeroed in on one special leaf during a recent press conference where she told the media the target date for opening Route 209 is Nov. 1.

Press was invited to visit the work site in Dingmans Ferry which has caused the road closure since Oct. 2011.

We parked on the road and dodged some moving dump trucks and cement trucks on a short walk to the construction site. On the way, Sandt spied a freakishly large oak leaf among the fallen leaves. She darted over to the leaf and picked up the monster greenery.

We all wished for a ruler to measure leafzilla.

Photographer Dawn Benko shot a picture of the leaf next to a shoe to show its size.

Sandt brought it back to her office later where she measured it and sent me an email

“So- the giant oak leaf measures 16″ long by 12 ” across!  That’s Huge!!!!!” Sandt wrote with six exclamation points for emphasis.

Sandt sent a photo of the leaf next to the ruler with a pair or sunglasses set on top to show the size.

Her enthusiasm was infectious.

For entertainment, I’ve added a fedora, bow tie and facial features to create the best dressed leaf in the park.

Leafy just needs a name.
