Free agent defensive end Julius Peppers is scheduled to visit the hell-bent Chicago Bears on Friday, and Peppers’ agent says it’s the Bears’ “deal to lose.”
The Bears are a desperate team, and coach Lovie Smith and his staff on a one-year leash and GM Jerry Angelo likely to get the boot if the team does not won this year.
So landing a game-changer like Peppers could help save some jobs in Chicago.
The Bears are pursuing Peppers so strongly that the Eagles have moved on from the bidding. Chicago is clearly prepared to break the bank in the uncapped year (if that’s possible).
The other player in the Peppers sweepstakes is the Washington Redskins, which would be the second straight year owner Daniel Snyder upgrades a very good defense with a big free agent signing. Last year, Snyder made defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth a $100 million man.
If the Bears don’t land Peppers, look for Aaron Kampman to be next on their list. Kampman tore his ACL in his first year as on outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. If he gets healthy, going back to defensive end in a 4-3 alignment, where he’s had a ton of success, would be an attractive proposition for him. Adam Shefter has already reported the Peppers and Kampman are connected in this free agency period.
Also, free agent running back Chester Taylor is also scheduled to meet with Chicago on Friday.
