Gaston passes

Chicago defensive tackle Bruce Gaston Jr., who Penn State extended a scholarship offer to last week, will not be a Nittany Lion.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Gaston, rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, was intrigued at first by PSU’s offer, but acknowledge that now, just over a week from signing day, is too late to start looking at a new school.

Gaston had been in contact with Penn State off and on over the past two years, but did not get the scholarship until last Thursday. He plans to make his decision this Tuesday. His five finalists are Boston College, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue and Wisconsin. Gaston has taken official visits to all but Notre Dame.

No big loss here. The kid has some potential, but to think a player would commit somewhere this late in the game was a bad gamble by PSU’s staff. Not really sure why they would go after a prospect so close to signing day especially when its thought that scholarships are tight.
