more movies

Caught a couple more movies, two of which are part of the five in
competition for best feature. Unfortunately, I’ll only be able to see
three — or maybe four — of them however because of scheduling and
screening conflicts.

The afternoon slate:

Pangs: A 15-minute short, but darn interesting for those 15 minutes,
if not gross and slightly weird. A guy has had a mysterious cough for
about three weeks that the doctors can’t diagnose. A Iraqi cable
repairman, however, realizes it might be psychosomatic. Turns out it
is, in a weird, weird way.

Splitting Hairs 2.0: Case Cold: No one has been able to tell me yet
if there was actually a “Splitting Hairs 1: Case Lukewarm,” but I’m
kinda hoping there wasn’t. Look, I’m all for guys going out and having
fun and making a movie about mob corruption infiltrating the NYPD. At
least I think that’s what it’s about. But if you’re going to do it on a
camcorder with your buddies, that’s probably where it should stay.

Dancing Alone: If you checked Wednesday’s paper, you know I talked
to writer Matt Kelly and director Leroy Warner this week about this
movie they made, so I was looking forward to it. I gotta say, I was
pleasantly surprised. It’s about as close to a chick flick as you can
get without being a chick flick (I joked after with Matt that we have
to check him for his, umm, manhood), but comes up with an interesting
twist at the end that impressed me. Some tighter scenes would help, but
not too shabby at all. Good luck in LA guys.

That’s it for today, I’m starving. I’ll be back tomorrow with some
more, including a movie-making crew that claims they have footage of a
new Bigfoot. Saw a piece of it today, and let me say I’m a little, umm,
skeptical. But open mind tomorrow.
