women and sports don’t mix (apparently)

As per the Monday usual, here’s last weekend’s box office report, with a new record on our hands. The Will Smith movie I Am Legend opened to a record $76.5 million, the biggest opening ever for December (which includes all of the Lord of the Rings movies). I said back in November during Sharp’s holiday movie preview that the movie had huge potential, but I never saw this much. You can pretty much mark it down right now — Will Smith is the biggest movie star on the planet. In an age where no one knows what exactly sells anymore, Smith sells. It’s almost impossible for me to believe at this point he was the Fresh Prince. Until I watch a rerun of one of the hundreds of Fresh Prince episodes I’ve seen a dozen times or so. Then it’s easy.

But that wasn’t even the biggest surprise of the weekend box office. Alvin and the freakin’ Chipmunks made $45 million. For those who don’t know, a $45 million opening is almost a dead guarantee for a sequel, so expect a Alvin and Chipmunks 2 in theaters Christmas ‘09. Now if you’ll excuse me, I simultaneously have to hold a funeral for Jason Lee’s credibility and throw up in my mouth.

As an Eagles fan, it’s always nice to beat the Cowboys. It’s even nicer when TO stinks up the joint. But I’ve found a new level of enjoyment when the Eagles to beat Dallas: When Tony Romo brings whatever new singing blond girlfriend he’s got that weekend. Last year it was Carrie Underwood (on Christmas Day, no less), this year it was the former Mrs. Lachey. And what a display she put on, mugging for the cameras like it was her own concert. It’s pretty obvious her publicist placed the call to FOX, which was broadcasting the game, and told them where she was going to be. Sad. Oh, and she looked like pooh on a stick.

So why is sports the only thing where it’s OK to bring your wife/girlfriend/significant other to work with you? I’ve never even considered saying “Hey hon, wanna come to work to watch me type?” And as midday radio host Colin Cowherd brought up on ESPN Radio this morning, you never see Gisele Bundchen showing up at a Patriots game. Might tell you something about Romo’s dedication. At least I hope it does.

Speaking of football, after two years in the basement, I made it back to my fantasy football league championship game. In a two-player keeper league, I got Brian Westbrook with my first pick and Randy Moss in the third round. As they say, the rest is history.

Wesley Snipes is either the craziest melon farmer alive, or he’s just the most relaxed. You decide.

If there is one thing this year that has really ticked me off, it’s this continued success of the High School Musical franchise. So yeah, I’ll admit it. I’m a little happy when one of the cast members has problems. Does that make me such a bad person? I don’t think so.

It looks like Lost is blinking first. ABC had toyed with the idea of holding off on airing the eight produced episodes of Lost altogether until it had a full season ready and the striking writers were back to work. Not anymore. The series will start season 4 on Jan. 31, part of a big premiere week for ABC.

Multiple sources are saying Bionic Woman has been canceled by NBC. Not a second too soon.

NBC is saying both Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien will be back at work starting Jan. 2. I think it’s fine if Leno goes back, he’s barely a member of the WGA anymore anyway. I’d be surprised if he writes a joke a month on his show. But Conan, from all reports, still is heavily involved in the writing on his show, so he may be looked at a little differently by his writers. It does put hundreds of people back to work though, and that’s always a good thing. Still, a little more solidarity would have been nice from these two.

Finally, tonight is what you’ve all been waiting for — the season 2 finale of I Love New York. This is the only reality show I watch, basically b/c my wife can’t get enough of the whole Flavor Flav/New York VH1 world. I saw these final two coming a mile away, and right now, my money is on Tailor Made. He’s been a champ since he spit on Mr. Wise about two months ago. He’s just been lying low, letting everyone else get in fights and eliminate themselves (Pretty) while the memory of The Spit drifts further and further from everyone’s mind. He’s even getting along with the other guys in the house, none of whom could stand him just a couple weeks ago. Budha, on the other hand, has been a train wreck for the last three episodes (at least). I was somewhat surprised Punk got kicked off last week, but it wasn’t that surprising when you realize VH1’s perfect last two guys would be Tailor Made and Budha. I’d say Tailor Made is a -130 favorite (mainly b/c of the Sister Patterson factor) and Budha is at about +170. Neither pick would surprise me though.
