local lovin’ and vic mackey the crybaby

A quick word from our sponsor. That’s me.

First, I’m pointing you to the 7-4-7 today because I decided to make it an all-Thanksgiving Eve 7-4-7. I rarely do that, but it’s the biggest night out of the year, so screw it. It’s out a day early, just like all of Sharp this week. So there you go.

Also, people who are on our e-mail list are probably going to kill me for how many times I’ve mentioned this, but we’re trying to grow our reader-submitted photo section. We’re going to start putting up all kinds of nightlife photos. So if you’re out tonight or any night and wanna flick some pics for us, send them in the next day and we’ll get them up on Sharpmag.com. We’re especially looking for pics from tonight.

Some local IOI (Items of Importance):

Two cool things this weekend that couldn’t make it into the 7-4-7 because they weren’t on Thanksgiving Eve. First is a benefit for the East Penn Crushbunnies, a local roller derby team, over at Lippy’s in Marshalls Creek on Friday night. $5 gets you in.

Then there is Stroudsburg resident and saxophonist Jay Rattman playing with his new Jay Rattman Band at the Deer Head Inn on Friday night from 7 to 11 p.m. He’s a member of COTA Festival Orchestra and is in his junior year at the Manhattan School of Music. Tickets are $12 at the door.

If you were thinking of heading to Scranton this weekend to see former American Idol (and former Sherman Theater performer) Ruben Studdard in “Ain’t Misbehavin’” at the Scranton Cultural Center, but you weren’t thrilled about the price of the tickets, you’re in luck. The center is offering tickets for three different weekend shows for $20. Call the center at (570) 341-1111 and mention “stimulus” to receive the offer.

And some quick entertainment news items:

January is quickly becoming quite the crowded TV month. I’ve already told you that Nip/Tuck, Damages and Scrubs are coming back early in the month, Dollhouse and Lie To Me premiere on FOX with American Idol, now NBC has made it official and announced Friday Night Lights airs its third season starting Jan. 16. It’s been really, really weird reading about FNL while the third season airs first on DirecTV. I’m not quite sure how to handle this. I have been able to avoid most major spoilers, though I have skimmed through the reviews that are saying this season is just as good, if not better, than the first season. I’m not sure how that’s possible, but we’ll see. Feel free to post a spoiler-free opinion if you’ve been watching on DirecTV. Let’s repeat that: SPOLIER-FREE!!!

I started out watching Sons of Anarchy on a lark, basically because it premiered early enough in the TV season that nothing else was really on, plus it was being shown OnDemand, so I could catch up at any time. I’m more than happy to report it was the best TV decision I’ve made this year, and from the sounds of it, it looks like those of us who did tune in will be getting a major payoff in tonight’s season finale. Sounds like FX will be too.

(KINDA SPOILER ALERT!!!) Speaking of finales, I did one of my favorite things last night by watching the last half hour of The Shield’s finale despite never watching anything after the pilot. But I figured I might as well see how ol’ Vic Mackey was doing. And you know what? For as much as everyone talks about how tough he is, dude sure cries a lot. And I always had heard he was was crazy loyal. So I turn it on and he’s selling one of his boys down the river? Nice! That’s probably not the perception the show’s creators would have wanted an outsider to get of the entire product. I guess the ending made sense, the man can’t live without his gun and all. But if you were one of the millions of people who thought he was going to shoot himself, don’t be silly. Even I knew that wasn’t happening.

One finale I avoided like the plague despite being on TV at THE EFFING BAR I was at last night was Dancing with the Stars. Score one for American common sense though with hottie Brooke Burke winning over Lance Bass. I’ve been a Burke fan since Wild On.

You know, for someone who says he’s retiring, Michael Cera sure has a full plate. He’s got a low-key movie coming to Sundance and — I’m only assuming – he’s got to be in the Arrested Development movie supposedly on the way.
