Race Weekend Fun

I know I promised a big concert ticket giveaway announcement today, but I have to put it off for the weekend. My bad. It should be coming Monday. But from the requests I’ve heard, you’ll be just as pleased Monday as you would have today.

Strictly local today. It’s race weekend, so if you can’t find something to do, you’re just not trying. Some of the highlights:

Normally, the race is nothing but a headache to me. Going there is even worse, because the only times I’ve ever gone has been to work in some capacity. Which means I’m sober. And I’ve always been in the infield. And being sober in the infield for a non-NASCAR fan just isn’t fun. It’s always too hot, it’s usually annoying and it’s darn near impossible to keep up with the race. And it’s just sooooooo big. It’s really hard to get around unless you have a bike or something. But I was actually considering going this weekend for one reason — to meet Jason Lee. Regular readers know these three things about me are true: I love Kevin Smith movies, I love Almost Famous and I love My Name is Earl. Hence, I love Jason Lee. It’s not man-crush status, mostly because my wife already has him on her list and that would just be weird. We’ve already got Fiona from Burn Notice on both our lists and that’s a little awkward. I put some feelers out to try and interview for the PopRox Sunday column, but it didn’t work out. Three things I would have asked him: 1. When you’re in an airport or something, what’s the line people try to yell to you the most? (My top 3: “What’s a Nubian?” “Your mother’s a tracer!” and “Your looks are becoming a problem!”) 2. In his life, how many times do you think your son will get beat up over Pilot Inspektor? 3. Why do you lip sync the Elvis stuff in Memphis Beat? It completely throws me and makes me not want to watch the show, which I stopped doing about four episode in. So I guess we’ll never get the answers for those. If anyone sees him at Mount Airy or something this weekend and dares to ask those questions, feel free to pass along the answers.

Pocono Raceway Festival is kinda like Grandparent’s Day — it’s a made-up festival to get money. That’s not a bad thing, since if the Downtown Stroudsburg merchants weren’t getting that money, it would just be going somewhere else, maybe even outside the county. So I have no problem with it at all. But Marshall Tucker and Blue Oyster Cult … they’re not doing it for me. I don’t fear the reaper as it is, I don’t need someone telling me not to over and over again. I’ve always felt that song is kinda like a lullaby or something, like in the first draft it was called Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark or something. But it’s a nice afternoon to hang out in Stroudsburg.

ahhhhhhh, buzztime

ahhhhhhh, buzztime

Speaking of hanging out in Stroudsburg, I get about 90 minutes to myself every week where I go to a bar. It happens Fridays at about 5. Other than that, pretty much every other second of my week is spoken for. So yeah, I like to relax in those 90 minutes. I usually go back and forth on what bar I go to, but I’ve been hitting Sarah Street the last couple weeks for one reason — they just got the Buzztime trivia game (formerly NTN). I’m a huge NTN fan, there was a period of my life where most of my weekends revolved around it. When I got my job at the Pocono Record, I couldn’t believe there was no bar out here that had it. So I’ve been waiting for more than six years for the Poconos to get it, and now they’ve got it. I’m pretty happy. If you’re playing and you see any previous high scores by SHARK, that’s me. I think I’ve got a couple up now.

Outside the Burgs, I got a note yesterday that two restaurant/bars I like are joining forces. desaki has been loaning one of their sushi chefs to Barley Creekand now their partnership is going even further. Barley Creek will be brewing a new beer specifically for desaki, called, umm, desaki Lager. The beer debuts at desaki in Swiftwater tonight at 7, and the first 100 people in the door get a free sample. This is one of those times in life where we get to hear our two favorite words: free beer.

I wish I had the balls to do the Warrior Dash — but I chickened out. I was seriously considering it in April, but decided against it because … because … screw it, I have no excuse. I’d even love to go there to see it happen tomorrow or Sunday — but I’m too lazy. If anyone is doing it, drop me a line after you do it to let me know how it goes.

If you have something going on at your favorite bar in the Poconos, or just something cool you think people would be interested in, you can always send it to me and I’ll try to get a mention of it. I’ve been terrible promoting local events, but I want to try to get back into it. I’ll try to do another one for Fourth of July Weekend, so if you have something going then, send it in.
