ZZ Top Tickets and Your Week Ahead

Keeping with the new Friday promise — we’re all local. At least through the summer. It’s easy to stay local these next couple days because it’s race weekend, so if you can’t find something to do, you’re not trying.

A quick detour looking two weekends ahead. In the final summer ticket contest of the summer (I think), I’ve got a pair of tickets to see ZZ Top at Mountain Laurel in Bushkill on Aug. 20. Have at ’em. Normal PopRox ticket contest rules apply, I’m not going over them again. Maybe I’ll post them again next week, but you can find the general ones here. Anyway, you can enter with your name, age, town you live in and daytime contact information either by emailing it to me, by messaging on Facebook or by DM on Twitter. As per the usual, if you enter on Facebook or Twitter, you’re entered twice. The deadline to enter is Aug. 17.

On to the week ahead. Remember — these events listed here came in from either email or Facebook invites. If you don’t see your event listed here, or if you have an upcoming one you want to make sure I mention, get it to me in one of those ways:

i can't remmeber if i found these girls or if our photographer did, but i can tell you it was freakin' hot that day

Yeah, there’s a race. Apparently some people go to it and drink a beer or two. I’ve only been twice, and both of them were to do stories on what goes on in the infield. The things I found … they’re fun. A little scary, but fun. As long as your definition of fun is doing keg stands at 11 in the morning. Coincidentally, that is my definition of fun, so the infield to me is a blast. If you’re looking to get blitzed, Turn 1 is the place for you. It’s organized chaos. The stories are always that the track cracked down on security in Turn 1, but that basically means, “We’re looking for people who we think have a 75 percent chance of pulling out a semi-automatic machine gun and shooting someone.” Other than that, anything goes. For the ladies, just so you know, the stories are true. You will be goaded into taking off your top on numerous occasions, and you run the risk of having beer poured on/flung at you if you don’t abide. Just wander around and look drunk, and people will offer you beer. Actually, that should be my next story. Go up there with no money, no beer and try to get loaded. I could do it by noon, easy. But just remember — there will be cops everywhere coming out of the place with DUI checkpoints set up. Doesn’t matter which way you go, they’ll be there. So make sure you have a driver. On the bright side for designated drivers, this is worth, like, eight reciprocal designated driving assignments. Hold this one over your buddies and you shouldn’t have to worry about driving again for the rest of the year.

Race weekend means people — so all the touristy spots pull out all the stops this weekend. Mountain Laurel has the right idea by scheduling a show that is a perfect complement to the NASCAR crowd — a Larry the Cable Guy stand-up show. Why not? He’s never played the Poconos, you’re trying to get a new audience for the venue and it fits in perfect with the NASCAR demographic. It’s a no-brainer. Lots of comedy/redneck-type activities before the show, too. Oh, and the winner of the tickets I had to give away is Kimberly Manness of Stroudsburg. Congrats!

Couldn’t tell you one song the John Butler Trio sings. I’m completely clueless on jam bands and country groups — and I like it that way. Anyway, apparently JBT is big in the jam community, and they’re going to be at the Sherman Theater on Saturday. That’s not exactly the perfect mix with NASCAR, but believe it or not, there are people who will be in the Poconos this weekend that don’t care about NASCAR. I know, right? Crazy! The theater has been touting this as the smallest venue on the band’s tour, and looking at the rest of the tour, I can’t really tell if that’s true or not, but I’ll take Rich’s word for it and go ahead and say it is the smallest venue on the tour.

Something else I don’t know much about is NASCAR itself, so I’m not up on the Sprint Cup driver standings. All I know is what I catch on SportsCenter if I’m on the treadmill and am too busy or tired to change the channel. Which makes it all the weirder that I rode in a stock car last week with Clint Bowyer (look for the story and video on Sunday), and didn’t know him from Clint Black before then. Actually, that’s not true. I know who Clint Black is because he had a funny cameo in an episode of Wings.

Contained in that clip is also one of my favorite Rebecca Howe moments, even though it was in Wings. It’s the oft-quoted line in the Sadowski household “I don’t think so!” I was going somewhere with this. Oh, right, NASCAR drivers. There will be appearances of drivers and cars throughout the Poconos this weekend, which doesn’t do anything for me because of my aforementioned ambivalence to NASCAR. But tonight at Mount Airy, driver David Ragan will appear at the casino for a Q&A sessionfrom 7 to 8 p.m. It’s free. After the event, the casino will show the NASCAR movie Days of Thunder at its outdoor Cabana Bar at 9:30 as part of its Movies Under the Stars series. I have no idea what the other movies were, and the website doesn’t have any others listed. Here’s my Days of Thunder review in four words: Rewatchable but typical Bruckheimer.

Best Buy in Stroud Township is running a “Local Heroes” promotion on Sundaywith discounts for military, fire, EMS, police, hospital and teacher personnel in the Poconos. So, like, everyone around here who doesn’t work at Sanofi can get a discount on Sunday at Best Buy in time for back to school. Oh, and me, too, I don’t qualify. Maybe that’s not enough to move your needle. So hows about this: FREE FOOD! Moe’s, the Chateu Resort and Edible Arrangements will be providing it. Am I the only one who thinks of Edna’s Edibles when I hear Edible Arrangements? Maybe the company started in Peakskill. I favored Over Our Heads anyway, I always thought Edna’s Edibles was for snobs.

Really, is there anything past beer and wine festival that needs to be said? Blue Mountain in Danielsville is having one this weekend. Looks like they have about 30 beers coming to the event, but I’d probably just set up shop in front of the Yuengling tent and by about hour 2, start berating people who went elsewhere. I’m a tad brand loyal, yeah. Pair of Nuts will be there providing the music.

I usually think twice before going out to the bars on a race weekend, but when I do, I’m always surprised by how uncrowded it is. It’s like any other summer weekend, really. Maybe that’s because I go to places that I expect to be off the beaten path a little bit. So it’s probably safe to go see Joe O’Malley play his gee-tar at the Frogtowne Innin Canadensis tonight.

best buds. for now.

best buds. for now.

Two regional chances to see Jay-Z and Kanye this fall, and both of them go on sale Monday. The show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly is Nov. 2 and the two stops at the Meadowlands are Nov. 5 and 6. Just be advised — this tour has already been rescheduled once, so buy tickets at your own peril. I say they get through 70 percent of the tour before they call it off, but I can’t imagine a scenario where they finish it out. I have no idea why they picked an arena tour. Why not a stadium tour? A stadium tour would sell out just as quickly as an arena tour, with 70,000 paying customers instead of 20,000. Weird. The summer concert season blew chunks, there wasn’t a Stones, Boss or U2 playing this summer and every big stadium around here was empty all summer. Don’t you think with the NFL lockout looming and revenue being lost every day that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie would have signed those two in a heartbeat to play Lincoln Financial Field in Philly, especially with no other concerts there this year?
