Your Poconos Weekend Fun Guide

Quick edition of the Fun Guide today, sorry about that. As always, if you have something you want to see in here any Friday, email me or send a Facebook invite to the PopRox Facebook page.

it looks like big sean is wearing one of those helmets with a beer on each side.

So what if I’d have to hear a Big Sean song before I know who he is, and even then I couldn’t guarantee it. That shouldn’t make me feel old, right? Right??? Anyway, he seems like an up-and-comer in the hip-hop world, and he’s coming here next month. ESU’s Campus Activities Board is bringing Big Sean to the Sherman Theater on March 30. Tickets went on sale Thursday to ESU students only, who will have first dibs on all the tickets for the first three weeks they’re on sale. The rest of us schleps will have to wait to see if there are still tickets left after that. The price is right — just $10 for students for those first three weeks. Let’s hope this concert goes better than the last hip hop act brought to the Sherman by CAB. We know now that none of it was the fault of either the theater or CAB, but still. Let’s also hope Big Sean is a nicer guy than Sean Kingston, who has been tearing up the charts in Bulgaria. Does Bulgaria even exist anymore?

The Sherman has another college-themed show going on sale today, but take note — it’s not at the Sherman Theater. The Dayglow paint party is set for April 21 and will be at the Sherman Theater’s Summer Stage series, which will be at Pocono Valley Resort in Reeders. Tickets go on sale at noon today.

Face it guys, there just aren’t that many chick flicks for us. That’s why they call them chick flicks and not man movies. But just like you can get your girl to agree on a Die Hard or Spider-Man movie, you’re going to have to bend sometimes too. And if you’re gonna bend, you might as well do it on Valentine’s Weekend. And if you’re gonna bend on Valentine’s Weekend, you might as well do it with the best chick flick of all time, The Princess Bride, which is showing as part of the revival series at Pocono Community Theater at noon and 10 p.m. Saturday. I love Princess Bride. It’s one of the funniest, cleverest scripts that’s ever been written, from one of the funniest, cleverest movie writers ever (William Goldman, who may or may not have written one of the other best scripts ever, Good Will Hunting). It’s one of the most comically quotable movies ever. Since I saw that movie in like 1988, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone said “I MEAN IT!” without immediately saying, “Anybody want a peanut?” If the person looks at me like I have lobsters crawling out of my ears, I know it’s someone I probably don’t want to associate with. When I got a Blu-ray for Christmas, it was one of the five or six movies in my DVD collection that was immediately upgraded. Anyone who still somehow hasn’t seen it, I couldn’t recommend seeing it on the big screen with anything less than “You need to.”

Or you can try out a movie you’ve never seen before, which is probably what you’d be getting if you checked out the Black Bear Film Festival’s special Valentine’s Weekend mini-movie fest at the Milford Theater. If I had to pick one movie that’s being shown over the weekend, I’d go with Waitress. It’s one of those movies I really liked when I saw it and it made my top movies list of 2007, but I haven’t seen it again since then.

it's ok if this is why you like st. patrick's day parades. me too.

Yeah, it’s only Valentine’s Day. But you know that little St. Patrick’s Day Parade you all love that runs through the ‘Burgs? It don’t come cheap. Even though you can walk up and drunkenly watch it for nothing, it still costs money, lots of money. So do your part! Johnny O’s is holding a fundraiser for the parade with Irish dancers and pipe bands. It’s a Finnegan’s Wake celebration, which if you don’t know, just means a bunch of people get drunk and sing. That’s really all you need to know. The fundraiser is from 6 to 9 at Johnny O’s in East Stroudsburg.
