In case you don’t know, Friday is the day I run down some of the local happenings around the Poconos. If you have something going on that you want to see here for publicity, email me or send the PopRox page a Facebook invite.
We’ve got some quick pop culture links down on the bottom, so if you’re boring or don’t like people/socializing, just scroll down to get an analysis of the latest Avengers trailer.
You may already have heard about it by now, but there will be a benefit for the family of Baby Alex O’Brien, a 6-month old from Moscow who died earlier this week while awaiting a liver transplant. That’s hard to even type. The fundraiser has been scheduled for a couple weeks, but it couldn’t get in before Baby Alex died in Philadelphia this week. Now the money will be going to cover the funeral and family expenses. It’s a darn good lineup of some of your favorite bands in the area — 3, Flyin’ Blind, Postal, Scooby-n-Zeppy and Sweet Charity. The event runs from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Cinder Inn in East Stroudsburg. It’s a $5 cover, and $5 for an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner.
Big Things will be KC’s Pub for their first time tonight. And since I won’t remember it for next week — just like I forgot about The Godfather 40th anniversary showing at Cinemark Stroud Mall yesterday — KC’s is also doing a pong tournament on March 8. I’m pretty sure I’d embarrass myself in a pong game right now, but man I used to love playing. It’s one of those things that if you’re still playing pong after your’re 30, there’s something wrong with you. That said, I’d LOVE to be able to play beer pong every weekend at every bar for the rest of my life. Yeah, there’s something wrong with me.
It might be a little too late now to catch it, but Philly rock station WMMR is broadcasting live from Jack Frost in Blakeslee today. That’s not the cool part, since you probably have to listen on the Internet to catch Preston and Steve (who are also there). The interesting part is that the slopes will be having cardboard racing today, and from the looks of things, they have some pretty neat cardboard sleds out there so far. I have no idea how they’ll be judged, but it should be fun watching them crash because you can’t steer cardboard. Not that I know of, at least.
There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who like Gilbert Gottfried — who’s at Mount Airy on Saturday night -- and those that don’t. I’m firmly entrenched in the “like” category going back to his appearances in Beverly Hills Cop 2, Problem Child 1 and 2, and more importantly, his hysterical guest spots on Night Court which somehow, some way, aren’t on YouTube. Or apparently, anywhere on the Internet. I’m calling BS on that, especially since his petty, annoying insistence on penalizing $55 and time served changed the way Harry doled out his brand of justice for the last two seasons of the show. I know I have those episodes on VHS somewhere unless my mom threw them away with my GI Joe stuff, which she claims she didn’t, but I know she did. But at least we’ll always have his spots on Wings. Dammit, I can’t find video of those either! Insane. If anyone can find either of those, send them in to me. Stupid Internet.
Make good chili? Wanna show it off? Or do you wanna just eat good chili? I fit in the last one, by the by. Daniels Top-of-the-Poconos Mountain Resort is holding its annual chili cook-off and salsa competition Saturday afternoon. They’re still taking entries, so if you think you can brag about your chili — I’ll brag about my wife’s chicken chili — get up there and sign up.
Sometimes, one day of chili isn’t enough, so why not make it two? And go ahead and add some wings to it too at Erhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant on Lake Wallenpaupack on Sunday afternoon. Can’t seem to find the restaurants that are participating, but I’m not well versed on the wings of the Lake Region anyway.
Friend of PopRox Joe O’Malley is at the Frogtown Inn in Canadensis tonight starting at 8. One thing you can say about Joe — you’ll usually get home at a decent hour. Something to be said for that.
Dance party at the Pocono Brewing Company tonight, it starts at 10. Cover is $2. I hate covers in general, but $2 ain’t too shabby.
Some leftover stuff I didn’t get a chance to get to before now:
Nice. I got the Indiana Jones series for Christmas on DVD a couple years ago, and now they’re coming out with a new Blu-ray version. George Lucas, do you have any shame at all? The answer is, resoundingly, NOOOOOOO!!!!!! The man needs to be stopped. Even if it’s not really him doing it — this is probably more a studio decision — he needs to reign some of this crap in before someone actually walks up to him on the street and kicks him in the nuts for selling out so hard. It’s coming soon.
Even though the idea sounds freakin’ ridiculous — Jessica Lange coming back to American Horror Story this year as a different character — I’ve learned to trust Ryan Murphy and his team. When I don’t trust him, I’ve been proven wrong. So we’ll just let this go and see how it plays out.
For the last couple months, I’ve been down on the Avengers movie. Really down. And it was getting worse by the day. It got even worse when I tore through the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon in January and thought it was fantastic, and that the movie wouldn’t be able to live up to the cartoon. The first trailer and the Super Bowl spot just didn’t do it for me. Then on Wednesday, the latest trailer came out. I’m now officially changing my stance on the whole thing and going with “officially psyched.” It’s a great trailer, a borderline trailer hall of fame candidate. We finally tone down the Tony Stark factor, but don’t totally lose it. We get more action, but still get a more defined story. We get more Hulk, but not an over-saturation. It’s everything we wanted the first couple trailers to be, and more. Whatever that monster thing is at the end of the trailer, it looks pretty cool. Although after showing it to my 3-year-old, who has become a huge Avengers fan (don’t judge), her biggest comment was “Wait, where’s Wasp?” Sorry. Still no Ant Man, Wasp or Panther. Maybe in the next one. GRADE: A+
