stuff ’round the mill
“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” — Jesse Owens

The mill rats at American Ribbon Mill on Ann St. in Stroudsburg run daily, at 7:30 am, holidays included. There are no days off for runners! There are days we don’t run but on those days we plan and prepare for our next run to be safe, joyous, and injury free! Our hope is for fitness! Through fitness we are stronger family members, healthier people, and better citizens! We are one for all and all for one! When we go home we may follow different faiths but on the roads and trails we are of one calling, fellowship, fun, and fitness! We have doctor’s lawyers and Indian chiefs! All are equal; all are subject to being the butt of a joke sooner or later! C’mon out and join us as we run until our worries and problems become much smaller and easier to cope with. Have your fill of running and joy filled fellowship while building a fitter stronger body for life!

WEEKEND RESULTS:
Following is a race report from Dr. Crystal Cunningham who lives in Kunkletown and found us through PARC. She hopes to join us at the mill one weekend soon so we all can get acquainted.

FROM CRYSTAL – Here’s our scoop.
We ran the ROUGE ORLEANS RELAY a 126.2 mile race from Baton Rouge to New Orleans along the levy. Our team of three were from various training and professional backgrounds. David “the robot” Khoo is an engineer who started running only 4 years ago and completed his first marathon in Philadelphia in 2012. Dr. Emily Abe is a general surgeon who also began running about four years ago and has never even completed a marathon prior to this race and showed us all that anything is possible! Dr. Crystal Cunningham is a general surgeon working in humanitarian and rural surgery which meant training in austere environments such as the bush of West Africa and the subzero temperatures of International Falls, Minnesota. She and Dr. Abe started running to get into shape after surgical residency took its toll both physically and emotionally and together they have lost more than 100lbs. The race was completed in 25 hours 3 mins with each leg being about 42 miles and placing first in the co-ed division (okay so we were the ONLY co-ed division!). The attached picture is us at the finish line where Emily and Dave surprised me, as I did the last leg, by wearing costumes!

FROM PATRICK FILANOWSKI
I am completing a study for my graduate thesis that involves using different pacing strategies for the mile run. I’ve been in contact with Joe Koch, the East Stroudsburg University men’s track and field coach, and he referred me to contact you for more potential participants. Coach Koch said that you know many runners in the community and would be of great help. Each participant in the study would first have their VO2 max’s tested here in our Human Performance Lab and then complete two different mile time trials on the indoor track. We are looking for participants from ages 18 to 30, who currently run competitively. Please let me know if you can help me with participation for the study.
