stuff ’round the mill
“Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?’” – Peter Maher
To be a endurance athlete requires a solid training base made up of years and many miles on the roads or trails. Simply said you need an abundance of play time and if you’re married with children you need to have a tolerant family relationship that allows you the time needed for training. It’s either that or you need a family that really doesn’t need or care for you much and is glad to see you gone. Grammie and I started our business as equal (ho ho ho) partners 32 years ago and we work together in our business daily. When I took up running and Grammie saw the benefits of the time I was spending out training and she quickly became a staunch supporter of my running. Heck many days I come home from a training run or ride and walk through the door and begin taking my running shoes off and Grammie will say “what are you doing?” I’ll say I just got finished running and many MANY times she will say “you don’t look tired, I’m sure you can go a LOT farther?” Thanks to that support and loving encouragement I fill my water bottles, grab a Fig Newton or some Dots and head back out for and additional hour or two, maybe three. I can remember many days when I looked back and saw Grammie smiling ear to ear and shouting “now don’t be in a rush take your time, run as FAAAAR as you can!” Grammie actually had a significant part in the beginnings of Road ID. Early on I would carry my wallet so I would have my driver’s license for identification purposes. Grammie always worried about me having cash and credit cards when I ran so she wrote the folks at what is now Road ID and told them how many wives would be happy to buy their husbands a Road ID band so they could leave their wallets home when they train. HONEST, that’s the truth!!!
The important point in this completely truthful story is that if you are going to train for and run marathons or ironman distance events you are inevitably going to borrow time from family and work and social commitments. Not every wife or husband is like Grammie, she doesn’t miss my pleasant personality when I’m gone she has WAY more time with me than she feels is necessary! In most family relationships there’s bound to be some strain at one time or another. One of the most important things I learned, Grammie may not agree, is that training time away from your family is just like a loan from a bank you must sooner or later repay your loved ones for their tolerance and support! I strongly recommend you make that payment include a sizable amount of interest, and I don’t mean just leaving your wallet at home! So please, while you’re making your training plans for the weeks and months leading to your most important events, also take the time and make the commitment to reward and thank those who support, or at least tolerate your training time away! Show them your appreciation for their support! Let it all begin with your heartfelt words of thanks followed by some joy filled time enjoyed together, or apart, which ever your loved ones prefer! In my case Grammie is much MUCH happier if I get back to training IMMEDIATELY! No shower is required; I just get out and train! Anyhow, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!

UNCLE DAVE’S ICE CREAM JOG ‘N HOG
http://www.jognhog.com/events/philadelphia/
July is National Ice Cream Month. What better way to celebrate than to run the Uncle Dave’s Ice Cream Jog ‘n Hog. Uncle Dave’s has been making its own super premium, hand-dipped ice cream since 2007. Trust us; it’s some of the smoothest, richest ice cream you’ll ever taste. Held on the grounds of Shady Brook Farm just north of Philadelphia, this event will consist of running about 2 miles, downing a quart of Uncle Dave’s vanilla ice cream, and then running back. Spoons included.
From Rod – WHAT KINDA WEENIE NEEDS A SPOON FOR ICE CREAM!?!? When your on the run fingers work best!!!
