stuff ’round the mill

FROM DON JEWELL

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. – Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919)

The growth of our fitness community is a glorious triumph Continues:

As my run with Stroudsburg High’s Emily Vail continued last Thursday I asked her about cross country coaches and what they do for practices and the details of the program. Her words about her coaches were respectful and appreciative. She said her coaches put in many hours and a great deal effort to help the team prepare and perform at the highest level they are capable of. She spoke of former head coach Doug Maclay and new head coach Evan Griswold who though he is fairly new as head coach he has been at the heart of Stroudsburg running for many years. Tom DeSchriver and Matt Sobrinski are among the assistance. Coaches Griswold, DeSchriver and Sobrinski can still lace ‘em up and race at a level that is incredible, they are so fast!

Other local High Schools have some extremely talented competitive runners from the past AND the present as coaches. Laura Mason Caiazzo, George Fair, and Drew Davis quickly stand out in my mind. I wish that you who are reading this could only feel the emotions that I am experiencing by thinking about and writing about these “elite runners”! They are my heroes, not only because they are runners at a level that a wanna be like myself can only dream of, but more importantly because they are the kind of citizens we as a community can look to with pride and hold in a place of honor. At a stage of life when many others go home and sit on a couch and enjoy the rewards of their past accomplishments these folks continue to stay fit, competitive, and to teach our youth the benefits of this sport we hold dearly. They teach and inspire by example what running can offer a person for a WHOLE lifetime. Oh yeah, some get paid a pittance! After listening as Emily describes the time involved, they like many coaches at the high school level are paid an amount that per hour may very well be below minimum wage. My only concern here is the knowledge that as I mention some names I know I’ve overlooked many names of running coaches and the coaches of all our High School sports programs! May the Lord bless them one and all AS He blesses us through them!

FROM BARB LEKON – I WROTE TO Barb As I hadn’t seen her in a while and found the rascal has moved to California, at least for a while. Here’s some of her response, with editing.

I haven’t been at the mill much because I’ve been living in Walnut Creek, CA since the end of August. We are in the East Bay area, about a half hour from San Francisco. The climate here is perfect, the scenery is spectacular, and as far as I’m concerned, San Francisco is the coolest city in the U.S.

We are planning to run Bay to Breakers in San Fran on May 19. It should be a blast! Stay in touch and I’ll continue to keep up with the news from there.

THE 102ND BAY TO BREAKERS Sunday, May 19th, 2013 at 7am – 12:00pm USA Track & Field Certified 12k Race
