stuff ’round the mill

My feeling is that any day I am too busy to run is a day that I am too busy.

–John Bryant

I’m building a rock retaining wall in my front yard. While working on it early last Sunday evening I put a hole in my head, I have a real lovely black eye. This was a good excuse for me to visit the Hospital emergency room which is an impressive facility with an impressive staff. When I moved my family here in 1980 the Pocono Hospital was ridiculed by everyone we met. It was sort of unnerving, no one seemed to feel the hospital or staff was competent. I don’t get to see most of the friends I made back then, my life took a different direction, but I’d love to hear their opinion of our hospital and staff today because I believe today we have an AMAZING hospital staffed by some of the FINEST DOCTORS, NURSES, EMPLOYEES ANYWHERE!!! Okay, yes I am kissin’ up; Tuesday I will have some tumors removed from my abdomen. I’m hoping about 20 to 25 lbs worth; get me to my runnin’ weight in a hurry! I figure I’ll take my shop vac along and ask Dr. Wheeler to give me a good clean out while she’s in there.

Anyhow I wind up in a conversation with the lovely doctor that patched the hole in my head about exercise and how she owed it to herself to find time for exercise. She sort of chuckled and said that that is her line, she usually uses on patients but that sometimes she is simply too busy to find time for herself.

I think we all are born with the natural instinct to stay in motion, to stay fit so we survive. THEN for many of us, we get confused, we get all messed up, the devil convinces us we DON’T HAVE TIME! You don’t have to run a marathon, you don’t have to run a 5K, just find some time to walk and smile and enjoy the blessed life you’ve been given. It is the rich desert you owe yourself and your family. And if you need support you need look no farther than the YMCA, the masses of personal training organizations that have sprung up here in our community, the Pocono Area Running Club, there are so many wonderful people here ready to cheer and guide you in your quest for fitness.

I’m not proud of it but I have failed to finish several of the important events I started out to do. You just never know what a day holds in store for you. But I live with one fact always in the front of my mind; I CANNOT COMPLETE ANYTHING I DON’T FIRST START! Please please please, make the decision to start! Finishing will take care of its self! Make time, make the commitment to get fit and stay fit!!!

“LITTLE” CARMEN is also running the NYC Marathon. Several folks emailed or told me like Scott Carmen also got in through the lottery. I asked them which Carmen? Carmen Campione is a drop dead gorgeous runner and tri athlete of Cuban decent, while “little” Carmen also Latino is a shorter strong and beautiful runner girl also. I don’t like reporting to y’all using “little” Carmen, I wanted to use her surname but no one seems to know it. So Sunday Morning Lisa Pizzuto are coming back into Stroudsburg on Wallace St. when Carmen came by. I asked her for her last name and she replied “it’s hard to pronounce.” I said “go ahead and say it I’ll tell you if you got it right!” She gets this gleam in her eye and says “you’ll have to buy me a beer first!” I’ve seen that gleam before, many many years ago. I’m WAY too old for that gleam so we’ll just leave it at “little” Carmen is running this year’s NYC Marathon!
