stuff ’round the mill
“Running is not, as it so often seems, only about what you did in your last race or about how many miles you ran last week. It is, in a much more important way, about community, about appreciating all the miles run by other runners, too.”
This past Saturday Morning I finished a nice easy 4 hour run with Lisa P, Don Jewell and Bill Carlton, jumped into my truck and headed home. I’m maybe a mile and half down the road when I spot a group of young men from the Stroudsburg Cross Country team moving gracefully and quickly and soon thereafter a group of young ladies and young Tommy DeSchriver their energetic coach who has a much older twin brother that is all business, a real stick in the mud reporter at the Pocono Record. I was tired, but the sight of these young folks perked me up, I felt my heart quicken and suddenly I’m thinking, could I quickly pull over and park my truck and maybe I could run fast enough to stay with them for a half mile or so? Young Tommy has no trouble stayin’ with the kids. He is a poised, magnificent runner! At the Record he can look tired and drawn but out on the road with his young teammates around him he looks vibrant and full of endless energy. On the roads and trails Tommy is a runner first and foremost. Tommy is everything I want to be if I EVER decide to grow up!
From the youngest to the oldest runner, from the fastest to the slowest runner, we all play a part in a community that will be as great as the sum of the love, care, and effort we put into it. Each one of us can inspire others to do better. Each one of us can encourage someone to take their “first strides” into fitness and better health. Each one of us can inspire another person to continue their running and fitness training. You never know when and where someone is watching and finding your training to be an inspiration! Run with pride in your eyes. Run with joy in your smile. Run with your glorious spirit shinning for all to see. Run with the satisfaction of knowing with each step you grow stronger and fitter. You are a part of a nationwide community of people dedicated to fitness. You have greatness within you; please share it, share it with EVERYONE!
Carmen Ortiz-Campione competed in Bald Bear Tri at the Bear Creek Resort in Macungie. She pulls alongside a downed rider with blood everywhere (not hers). She, being a nurse, administered help along with another competitor who was a doctor. When all was OK, she hopped on the bike again only to dismount and help another competitor with dizziness and chest pain. All turned out OK. She is amazing. I think we should encourage more “Carmens” to compete in tri’s. I know I’d feel safer.

FROM DEBBIE LENNOX:
I took on the double challenge at the Fronhofer Tool Triathlon (http://fronhofertooltriathlon.com/) in Cambridge, NY yesterday. I did an olympic at 9am and then a sprint at 2pm. With the combined time of the 2 races, I was the overall female winner by over 6 minutes!!!! The swim really helped my time. I had the 5th fastest swim overall in the olympic (1st female) and the 2nd fastest swim overall in the sprint (1st female).
It was a fun challenge with some great swag. Picture attached. I got the glasses for winning my age group in both the sprint and the olympic races and then the towel, 1/2 gal of maple syrup and coat hook thingy for being the double winner.
Double FTT Time 4:01:10
Sprint Time (.5m swim, 14.7m bike, 3.1m run) – 1:27:5
Olympic Time (1m swim, 24.9 m bike, 6.2m run) – 2:33:12

FROM LINDA YEAGER:
The 33rd Annual Princeton Freewheelers event – This past Saturday Doug Nichols, Mike Werkheiser, Frank Brown and I traveled to Mercer County Community College to participate in this cycling event. We all set out to do the 100 mile ride. We were joined by my brother and a couple of riders from his cycling club in Northern NJ. This isn’t a timed event but it was my first century ride so I made sure I checked my cateye to see my time at the 100 mile mark. To my surprise I was just under 6 hours which was about a 17.5 mph pace. Our total distance was 102 except for Doug and Mike. They started later than us and took a wrong turn and came in with 115 miles!
This is a fantastic event. All of the rest stops offered water, Gatorade and lots of food. You had the option to stop 4 times for the 100 mile course. Afterward they had a full meal for all of the riders. You can see more details or check out next year’s event at www.princetonfreewheelers.com
