stuff ‘round the mill
“The marathon is a charismatic event. It has everything. It has drama. It has competition. It has camaraderie. It has heroism. Every jogger can’t dream of being an Olympic champion, but he can dream of finishing a marathon.” Author unknown

This is a particularly interesting quote for me as I thought many time of running a marathon long before I took my first steps as a runner. I mean at a time when the thought of running was completely absent from my mind. I had no interest in running, other than a marathon! I had no concept of the training and discipline required.

My first marathon was 1993 in Atlantic City. I was going to run that one and be done with marathons, probably running entirely. I had made some friends through running but running simply didn’t provide reward I was searching for.

Three miles into the marathon run my right knee kept buckling, I was thinking about quitting, there was little doubt in my mind that IF I finished this damn run it would be my last!

In the end, with 26.2 miles of pain and suffering behind me I found myself completely astonished about my thoughts getting back to training for my next marathon. 4 hours and 36 minutes of thinking this sucks, I should be running faster, I should have trained harder. Kenny, Bobby, Dave, and Ray, they were all so way far ahead of me! Even Oprah ran her first marathon in 4:30, I was a disgrace!

Today my ONLY FEAR is I may not heal well enough to ever run a marathon again! So every day I get up with a plan to do some kind of exercise that will heal and re-build my body to marathon training condition.

If you are thinking about running a marathon, your first, you’re second, or maybe your 100th, train hard! Train well! Pick a program used successfully by others and follow it as closely as you can! Give yourself a chance, you’ll never know what you will be after you cross the finish line. When you cross that finish line you will be a different person.

Question is will one be enough for you??
