The view from my porch

FROM/written by DAVY CROCKETT (Davy is a well accomplished Ultrarunner, historian and author.)

The historic JFK 50 is running today for the 56th time in Maryland. It was just won by Jared Hazen in 5:34. But a bigger story is taking place. Kimball Byron finished it for the first time in 1967 at the age of 12.
Today he is going for his 50th JFK 50 finish at the age of 63!

“It’s just one of the best days of my year,” Byron said Tuesday. “I think of it like coming home.” Byron’s wife of 36 years, Hannah, characterizes her husband’s annual pilgrimage to Washington County “like fish going to spawn every year.”

“I just know it’s going to happen,” she said. “It’s in his blood to do that. As it gets closer to the race date … its pure adrenaline. He loves the course and running in honor of his dad.” (Herald-Mail Media)
