The view from my porch

Here we are in a new year, whoopee! That’s a sincere whoopee, not sarcasm!

Many think of the New Year as marking “out with the old and in with the new.” I don’t subscribe to that adage. I see life as a continual forward motion, constantly attempting to improve every step of the way.

During this year I will observe 74 years of life, 55 years of marriage, and 27 years of running. I don’t want to cast away one year of life, one year of marriage, or one year of running. I have been blessed!

In running some classify slow easy mileage as junk miles. I’ve NEVER agreed with that thought. When I began running I ramped up my weekly/monthly/yearly mileage fairly quickly. I found myself being the butt of jokes around the mill when we discussed weekly mileage. I started reporting to the guys and gals half the actual miles I was running and I still was running more than most folks, with the exception of Ed Bermudez who at 90+ miles per week was running more mile than me! There were 6 years I ran in excess of 4,000 miles (80 mile per week). Last year due to injuries I ran less than 500 miles. Some say I ran too much, while I don’t think I ran enough.

I don’t believe I am suffering from any injuries caused by my miles. I don’t believe there is such a thing as junk miles. I believe each mile, like each year, like each and every relationship, is a building block to the person we are continually becoming. Each mile we run this year is made possible by the miles we’ve run in the past.

So, I invite y’all to join me as I run every mile I can, for the rest of my life. I plan to run the best I can and as often as I can. Please be sure to get adequate rest! Let’s do it!
