Weather… again!

I often write about having a good rain plan for outdoor weddings, but there are other weather conditions to consider. Could be I’m obsessed with weather, but obviously it is quite important for any outdoor event.

During the recent heatwave, I had an outdoor wedding that was moved inside to an air-conditioned room. Good move! The elderly guests were the concern, but I’ve seen young men faint in hot weather. It is usually caused by being dehydrated, drinking alcohol, and/or are wearing those heavy dark tuxedos.

I know you may have had your heart set on that outdoor ceremony, but to put guests through something so uncomfortable or even, not to be too dramatic, unsafe, well, it’s just not a good idea.

But you can plan for the heat. Have umbrellas for shade, either for the entire site, or individual ones; or try to set up the ceremony in a shady spot or at sundown. Tell the men they are encouraged to take off their jackets. For summer weddings even the groomsmen can dress great without jackets. I recently had a fabulous looking wedding party with the men all in great shirts and ties, but no jackets.

The decision to move the ceremony all really rests with the couple, but remember most venues will want to know well in advance, so they know where and how to get the site set-up.

And it is a tough call when weather, by its very nature, is somewhat unpredictable, but that’s life.

Under some nice large trees!

Look at it as your first test as a married couple, face the problem head-on and make the call. While we all want the perfect weather for the big day, please, please plan for the opposite.
