Having your wedding on your own terms is something couples are striving for more and more these days. There are many factors to consider: cost, style, taste, values, and sometimes for second marriages couples feel they’ve already done the ‘big wedding’ and now they prefer something more intimate.
There is no right or wrong way to approach this, but it is important to consider what matters most to you, while balancing the needs of your families. We are very lucky to have so many gorgeous venues here in the Poconos, and all have lots to offer. Skytop Lodge, Stroudsmoor Country Inn, Mountain Springs Lake Resort and the Shawnee Inn – all come to mind!
But for some couples, something small and less structured is just the thing. The New York Times wrote about it recently and I couldn’t agree more. Intimate, lower cost affairs are gaining in popularity. The fun factor is also in the mix, because the entire event can be much more relaxed. No tuxedo required!
However – be forewarned! I have seen couples start off intending to create a small event, only to see the work grow and grow. So remember, when you choose a hotel or resort venue many of the details are taken care of for you. You can have a small wedding at large wedding venue. Most have smaller banquet rooms and will work with you.
A DIY wedding can be great, but you need to commit to your plan and stick with it. Don’t let it drive you crazy, and don’t keep adding this and that. Decide what you want and work within your budget. Use your values to guide how you wish to spend your money.
What size guest list are we talking about here? I’d say anything less than 75 guests is smaller, but under 50 is common, and even fewer than 20 is also popular. I’ve officiated many, many ceremonies for only the couple (note: you do not need witnesses in Pennsylvania), or the couple and just a few others, usually parents or children.
Another way to look at it is that if your guest list is smaller, you might be able to go all-out, top-of-the-line wedding of your dreams! Or you can be as casual, laid-back and thrifty as you wish, with a picnic or BBQ. It’s your wedding, and it will be fabulous, when it’s right for you!
