Four Reasons Why Fall Weddings Are Special

September is the new June and October is, well, pretty great, too. Fall weddings are more popular than ever, and for good reasons.  What is it about autumn that is so perfect for a wedding?

The Leaves – Here in the Poconos, as the weather changes, the turning leaves are a spectacular and totally free backdrop for a beautiful outdoor ceremony and celebration. I am often asked if the leaves will be turning on a specific date. The answer is that I can’t possibly know for sure. The ‘fall foliage forecast,’ as it is called, is as predictable as the weather, and we have three regions – southern, central and northern – that change at slightly different times.

Timing – In the autumn it’s still warm out, but the summer tourism frenzy is over because kids are back at school, so travel is easier and prices are a bit lower.

Décor – The decorations, colors and theme of a fall celebration is very appealing. Whether DIY or floral professional, autumn décor is gorgeous, and a great pro will knock your socks off in the fall.

Food – Seasonal foods abound and they add delicious charm to the theme. It is harvest time, after all.

There is something just natural and right about reflecting what is happening in nature with your event. But as I always say – do it your own way. You are not required to stick to a fall foliage theme, pumpkins or candles for your fall wedding. However jewel tones rather than pastels will certainly feel more in keeping with the season. I once officiated a summer wedding that had a snowflake theme. I’ll say it was a bit odd, and leave it at that.

Remember that the weather can swing wildly. It could be extremely hot, as hot as any peak summer day, or the chilly winds may be blowing. So be prepared with a jacket or wrap of some kind. Perhaps give your bridesmaids or mothers a gift of a lovely pashmina, those lovely soft cashmere shawls. Every season has its unique charm, but to me, autumn has a most special beauty.

Thank you Rob Lettieri for the gorgeous photo
