To Elope or Not to Elope…

Thinking of eloping? The stress of planning a wedding or family conflict can be a strong motivating factor.  For busy people just getting away from it all can be the appeal.  Some couples want to get married quickly, or just find the idea romantic, while others simply have different priorities about where to spend their money.

Folks who have previously been married sometimes feel a fancy wedding is inappropriate. They have ‘been there, done that’ and it didn’t work out for them.  But I feel that finding love again is something to be grateful for and worthy of celebration. However if eloping is what you want, then you should do it.

Most couples who choose to elope agree that they like the intimacy of ‘just-the-two-of-us’.

Be sure you research the local marriage requirements and waiting periods at your destination. Pennsylvania is a good state in which to elope because we have no witness requirement for your license. We do, however, have a three-day waiting period before you can use that license, so if you are coming from out of state you need to obtain the PA license three business days in advance. You may use a license issued in any county in PA in any other county. So if you live in, say, Philadelphia, you can bring your license to the Poconos and use it here. (check out my Pinterest for ideas for eloping in the Poconos).

Just because you are eloping doesn’t meant you have to skimp on style! You can still have a wedding that reflects your taste. In fact, if it is just the two of you, you might feel you can really splurge on certain elements. You should consider having a professional photographer to document this important moment in your lives. You can stay at a gorgeous hotel, and wear a formal wedding clothes. But then again you might just want to go with jeans. You can travel to a distant island, or celebrate here to the Poconos. Be as formal or casual as you wish.

Once you elope you will want to let family and friends know. And do it quickly! Don’t let them find out through the grapevine. A wedding invitation style announcement works, and of course personal calls to those closest to you. Be prepared to understand that some people may feel hurt that they were left out of your plans. A marriage is never just about the couple – it is also about families joining and community support. Let them know you love them even though you chose to get married without any guests.
