The essentials of choosing an officiant and other tidbits

If you are getting married in a house of worship, you probably don’t need to read this. But, what the heck, read it anyway. Today I want to talk about choosing an officiant for your wedding.  Just for complete clarity – an officiant presides over (officiates) a ceremony. They can be religious or not. ‘Celebrant’ […]

Autumn Holidays are upon us – and ritual will abound

We are coming to the really big season of holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah. I want to talk about the autumn holidays today and I’ll get to the winter holidays another time. Starting with Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve. The name itself comes from the All Saints Day celebration of the […]

A Wedding Etiquette Update

I last wrote about wedding etiquette in 2007 – yes, I’ve been writing this column that long, and reading that old piece showed me how much things have changed since then. So today I’m going to update you with some ideas about what is appropriate and some things to consider. I still believe that, while […]

‘Rockin’ the Boat’

Dance the Night Away – Dance Traditions From Around the World. I’ve been watching a charming series on Netflix, Derry Girls, which takes place in Derry (Londonderry) Northern Ireland, and is set in the 1990’s. Rituals are Everywhere

What?? She’s writing about rituals again? Yes I am, because rituals are a way to express something without words. Hey, is this a good idea?

Today’s column – not religion, not culture nor traditions. I can’t be so serious all the time!  Because I spend a lot of time on the internet, especially concerning weddings, I was thinking about how overwhelming it can be. There are so many ideas ‘out there’ – advice, cute ideas, you can easily get turned around. When […]

The extraordinary importance of the wedding vow

Wedding vows are perhaps the most important element of any wedding ceremony, and certainly deserve close examination. As you can imagine, after 15 years of officiating weddings, many, many weddings, I’ve heard a lot of vows spoken. Some funny, some surprising, some too long, some too short. How do you get the ‘goldilocks’ effect – […]

Making it work – new spins on old traditions

Last week I wrote about some of the not-so-pleasant origins of familiar wedding rituals, the bouquet and garter toss and cake smashing. Today I want to propose some ways to reinvent and renew customs that can sometimes feel outdated, awkward or even inappropriate. Like family, weddings can be complicated. When a particular tradition doesn’t work […]

How Do You Feel About These Traditions?

In weddings, as in many things in life, everyone wants to decide what does or doesn’t fit their style and point of view. I was once taken to task for suggesting the garter toss felt weird to me. Some women will still love to do this – it can be fun, sexy, traditional or even […]

Adults Only

I’ve seen little kids crying and being disruptive during the ceremony and I’ve seen them be angels. You never know for sure how young children will react, they may feel very stressed being in a new situation.
