1975: An air hockey mission

A dozen Monroe County youths, trying to break a reported record of 56 hours of playing air hockey, began their contest of endurance at 6 p.m. on Dec. 26, 1975, at the Stroud Township game room and continued playing for more than three days.

At first, each team member would play a half an hour. As time wore on, the kids took three-hour shifts, sleeping for six hours before they would play again.

At 9 a.m. Dec. 29, the publisher of the Guinness Book of World Record was contacted.

A student continues the air hockey marathon with hopes of breaking the record.

But the 12 players were told their record would not be recorded -  air hockey was not an international sport.
